4th Year, Semester B: Urban Renewal | Professor: arch. Amit Mendelkeren
Main subject: Urban renewal process on all levels in a given complex (Kiryat Yuval neighborhood, Jerusalem)
Leading concept: residential planning for a specific users
Architectural program: to plan a concrete renewal according to the appraiser multiplier 3 (200 units).
On three lots of old residential buildings ('train buildings' from the 1950s) I chose a design that would suit the resurgent Jewish communities operating in Jerusalem, including the Reform movement, the 'Elul' association, 'Bina - the movement for social Judaism', 'Beit Avi Chai' and more.
The residences intended for the community were divided into two groups: the first - family residences (long-term residence), and the second - residences for pre-military training (short-term residence up to a year).
To them I added community-supporting functions such as an alternative synagogue, a library, friendship classes, cafes and restaurants. For pedestrians, I added commerce and offices on the ground floors.
The architectural design was influenced by the evolution of the existing buildings: construction additions, improvisations and the missing ones. Since the lot is strategically located on the edge of a regional hill, I created "perforated" buildings that allow views through them to the distant landscape. The position of the buildings corresponds to the position of the exiting walking rout patterns of today. .
