The plot is in the center of the historical part of Naples.
Policlinici has a unique shape in the urban fabric of the core of Naples and it serves a lot of people. At the same time the hospital is an isolated place in the Neapolitan hyperdensity. This area is the object of our architectural study. It includes narrow streets, buildings up to five floors with mix of functions like restaurants, bars, shops, churches, hotels, university etc.
Our intervention is based on reconnecting the hospital with the environment by three autonomous components: the building, the bench and the stairs.
First, continue the series of autonomous buildings that the Policlinici creates which is different from the traditional Naples’s block system. We completed them with a squared shape volume reflecting the surrounding.
From a programmatic point of view, we chose functions that reinforce the connection between the hospital and the city: A medical conference and information center combined with a hotel.
As our project is made of compacity and solidity, we also created a canopy of trees surrounded by an oval bench. In addition, we leveled the plot which gave us the opportunity to create a staircase with bigger dimension that makes it possible to sit. In that way, we attract peoples to the area of the project.
As simple the building looks on the outside, as complex it is on the inside.
